Insulin-Why It Matters and What You Can Do

January 22, 2018

What’s insulin resistance and why should you care?Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar. Simply put, when you eat a meal, the body releases insulin to signal the cells to take glucose (sugar) out of the blood and into the cell. Insulin resistance is a condition that can occur with poor diet-high sugars, high trans fats- so the body always has to release a lot of insulin, and eventually the body’s cells don’t respond to the insulin and blood sugar levels stay high. This leads to a whole host of health problems like heart disease, fat gain, chronic inflammation, increased risk for heart attack and stroke, and more.So what can you do? Exercise and diet! Strength training and interval conditioning have been shown to be incredibly effective at increasing cells sensitivity to insulin. A diet high in vegetables, lean protein and nuts, as well as eating carbs that are high in fiber, is another key component to increasing your sensitivity to insulin!
