Reset Your Tastebuds

February 14, 2017

We’re fast approaching the halfway point of the Sugar Slash, and while many of you are locking in to your new routine, some of you may be a bit frustrated, asking “Why are we eliminating zero calorie artificial sweeteners?”The idea is that added sugars and artificial sweeteners are so much more sweet than natural sources of sugar (like fruit). If you continue consuming artificial sweeteners, your aren’t able to break your cravings for sweet tastes-which is one of the big reasons I’m against artificial sweeteners. I couldn’t find any scientific research on “resetting” your taste buds, but from personal experience I know that when you cut back on added sugars, your tastes “reset”. For example, you may find desserts you used to eat will now taste too sweet and you’ll be able to cut back on the amount of sugar called for in certain recipes.Additionally, research shows that artificial sweeteners can worsen your insulin sensitivity more than sugar. Artificial sweeteners can also lead to overeating because the body recognizes that although it has consumed something that tastes sweet, it has not ingested the calories that should be associated with that sweetness.I’ve already heard a lot of you commenting on how you’ve adjusted and aren’t craving sugar as much-awesome! If that’s not you, hang in there! Everyone’s systems and responses to sugar differ, but stay committed and “reset” your taste buds!
